I'm looking for some direction regarding the designer of a pair of chairs I bought from the estate of a wealthy real estate pioneer. The estate sale operator said they were italian, however I don't know if that was simply her opinion or if perhaps the family indicated their origin.
The chairs are high quality, well constructed, and well designed. They appear to be oak, the cushions are constructed of thick leather. The round dowel arms are wrapped in that same leather.
The rear straps of the chair wrap around the back of the chair down to the underside of the seat cushion - The front straps wrap around the front of the chair down to the underside of the cushion...where both sets of straps are joined to each other by springs. The cushions have leather "belt loop" like straps sewn to the back/underside. The ingenious design allows you to loop the front/back straps through the "belt loop" straps on the back/underside of the cushions, then connect the straps to each other...this system holds the cushions in place much like a belt holds your pants up! One more note about the front/rear straps, they appear to be made of a thick plastic like material, about 1/4" thick.
Just about everything in this estate was of an excellent quality made by designers, which leads me to believe that this pair of chairs are also designer chairs. There were also 3 Arne Norell Kontiki chairs at this sale (I was able to buy only one, someone else snagged the other 2). My mystery pair if chairs look moderately similar to Arne Norell, but I don't think they are a Norell design.
