Hi,
I will be there over the holidays, just wonder if there may be any recommended shops or locations that I must visit. Sadly the C$ is much stronger than when I left it, and I've been away quite a while so I'm not what's where these days anymore. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!

Downtown Montreal
There's Mies van der Rohe's commercial/residential complex downtown that is worth a stroll. We walked into the lobby of the residential side and told the guards we were students of architecture and they let us stroll around without being bothered. Perhaps they felt pity for us as it was very cold when we were there.

The place is called.....
Westmount square and is situated on the very west end of down town. Slightly to the sound east of it you will find the Canadian Centre of Architecture (CCA) a remarquable building and a architectural collection (drawings, photos, documents, books etc.) that is unparalelled in the world...(it is not public unless for scholarly work) but any exhibition at the CCA is always worth the visit...and they have a great bookshop.
Most retro-modern stores are om Amherst which is a nord/south street on the between down-town and "the village"
A fine store to visit is Bonaldo on the south end (close to the St Laurence river) of St Laurent street. You will find some other interesting stores if you walk St Paul street west from Bonaldo.
If you happen to be there on the 14th and 15th or 16th walk up St Laurent north of René Levesque to visit the souk@sat prise 5, where you can see most of what young Montreal designers have to offer.
Have a nice stay! and be prepared for the low temperatures...

Montreal is delicious!
In between your shopping be sure to just go and eat eat eat...the food is incredible. The design shops are all over the place so make sure to stop atthe cafes as you shop!

I could recommend...
dozens of restaurants but there is really no end to the list. The very top of the line (also in pricing)is either "Toqué" in front of the Palais des congrès, or the "Laurie Raphaël" ot the west end of President Kennedy. Especially the last one is worth your savings account. If you are more modest in your expense account but like to try an excellent good chef try the "Les Conservent" on 5064 Papineau (514 238 999) Looking at the location you might think I send you to the wrong place but wait untill you taste what is on your plate!!
