are all knockoffs in the same lower bastard-class as barrympls suggests? could some possibly be as nearly as good as or better than originals for a price?

I believe the knockoffs being made by Moderinica are better than most. I got a Saarinen ashtray from "Bauhaus 2 Your House" and it was made in Italy by a very high quality company.
So there is a difference.

hey lrf
sorry to hear that... yeah... i feel your pain...
i'm not sure why porsche knocked-off their turbo and s versions with an underpowered VW-sourced 6 cylinder
but hey, you can get a used turbo cayenne in the $50-$60's, maybe if lucky in the $40s. mine is an '05 with 40,000 miles on it. still running strong and perfect... scary fast. eats a lot of expensive tires every 10-15000 miles though

hey barry
thanks for the concession that there is a difference in reproductions and knock-offs
but why do you think that term "reproductions" only apply to those that are "licensed"?
to me, a knock-off is the $50 rolex selling on the ny street-corner. it looks like a rolex and says rolex. and the $3000 omega is a reproduction of a rolex... a high quality watch somewhat similar to another high quality watch, yet different and selling under its own brand
* i'm signing off for now... nice day today and family is pushing me out the door... catch up with you later

914 mid engine beer can
love the body design, the way it looks but i think my snapper lawn mower would be a little faster
I think i will try a v8 lexus suv they look like a nice car I have had 4 Mercedes ML in 10 years but a change will be nice.

I stand by my last post
And 'Caveat Emptor" to the buyer who does not do their homework and buy a poorly made knock off. Long live the legitimate faithful reproduction! The maker of these are far more honest in my book that the big corporation charging outgareous sums for a piece that they invent legitimacy to by trademarking a name!
And SDR I am with you...if there is a reasonable argument that a piece deserves legal protection for it current design iteration then by all means, protect it and I'll honor that.

Hey there I agree.
Target every now and then has the odd gem. I was really digressing relative to the Porsche. Perhaps the Cayenne Turbo S is a great vehicle, but the Turbo 911 is a stellar vehicle in almost any year. The 97 air-cooled 400+ HP coupled with a comparable amount of foot pounds of torque, uterly sublime. and given the right location to exercise - the A7 down the middle of Germany perhaps. It'll take a week to wipe the grin off your face, guaranteed.

lexus is all good
hey lrf
you can't go wrong with lexus. mercedes owned the luxury car segment for quite some time until toyota came along and knocked them off with the lexus brand.
also, consider an after-market supercharger kit for your V6 cayenne to add some ooomph... add 19" or 20" rims to dress it up. i like the black out treatment the cayenne 6-banger's get. very racy.
and i love the 914 body design... some excellent examples still survive. my next project car will hopefully be a 67-73 vintage 911S (or T/E version knocked off to S standards) and painted dark gray after Steve McQueen's car in LeMans (the movie). He was so cool driving it in the French countryside that quiet morning. the design speaks cool, timeless, power, agility and grace to me. steve mcqueen wannabe i am, but steve mcqueen i can never be.

turbos
hey big television man
my cayenne is only the twin turbo (450hp), not the turbo s (520hp). and no doubt, the 911 turbos are like pure unadulterated sex machines. my wife has named my cars: my mistress and my 2nd wife.
i'm getting older now and need to find the balance between a little less sport and a little more comfort. though i'm a good driver (walter rohl - i'm not), i just don't trust myself with the carrera turbo, gt2 or gt3.

would love to be able to blast down the autobahn one day... no speed limit! grin... indeed.

I think it was November 7,...
I think it was November 7, 1980 that the modern era cool died (the day Steve passed away) And while no one can ever take his place, one can certainly aspire to it. You my friend are heading in the right direction. His performance in LeMans was taut, understated and absolutely note perfect. To say nothing of the fact that virtually any Porsche will impart a bit of coolness. My wife looks at me like I'm from another planet when I prattle on about the Dr's exquisite engineering, must be a guy thing.

never knew one of these things existed , this would make a difference in the dog,
I love the body style, one of the greatest looking made,
i had some trouble with the shifting mechanism last month and they put me in touch with the rep and he said the car was underpowered for a 6000 lb body chassis....
I said duh .... now you tell me. I picked up the v6 cause i had a ML with a V6 and it was great! so I thought Porsche . wow we zow we , how could you go wrong with a v6 from these folks , boy oh boy was i wrong,
It was not a price thing, i just thought for tooling around the city that is all i needed, since i do have a new little Mercedes convertible for the sunday car.
I hate to say for $6000 bucks I would still be in love with the car I have a new lexus 470 on order.
My brother the twin went the lexus route several years ago and likes them, says cutomer service is unreal (to good). I was a holdout cause i thought the Porsche was cool as could be and a good looking ride, you would think Porcsche cares but they are like the rest of the European auto makers, We go by factory specs, so they can stick it up there ... and factory specs

Well I'm not much on SUV's, but will admit to purchasing a new Mercedes G500 a few months back to use as my midwest winter beast. I looked at the Cayenne Turbo(S?), and the BMW X5 4.8. The Benz is more refined than it looks, and I like the heavy duty militant design, without looking too much like a Hummer, etc.
Also in stable;
2006 BMW 650i coupe (White)
2005 Mercedes S 55 amg (White)
1991 Merceses 560 sec (White)
1988 BMW 635csi (White)
1974 BMW 3.0csi (White)
1965 Ford Thunderbird (Amber Glow)
on waiting list for a 2008 BMW 535i (White). Expected delivery mid November.

gemballa v6 turbo
lrf - gemballa makes the cayenne v6 "turbo" kit. power raised to 350hp... more power than its v8-s sibling. i think porsche has a bit more cache than lexus; it says you are a little more young at heart and apt to enjoy life and have fun... (no doubt, i'm in a mid life crisis funk). imho, porsche epitomizes german engineering, design, racing prowess, athletism, type a personality, power...
hmmm... if a car brand or car design can evoke such status or feelings, i wonder why we don't talk more about such things in this forum about how design makes us feel???

panamera - 4 door porsche sedan-saloon
mark, porsche will debut the panamera in 2009 and enter the go fast saloon-sedan luxury market. is it possible that we will see a white porsche added to your fine stable in the very near future?
having served in the marines, i appreciate the military look of the hummers and g500, even range rovers and defenders... very rugged for wild winters... i have to switch out my 20 summers for 18 winters, though. go for the 3M clear bra to protect from road debris. g500s are the fav of the hollywood set.. brad pitt and all
