So what is it that you're looking for musically? I like several new bands and songwriters, but you will never hear them on the radio, at least in my part of the country....

Name some bands you like and maybe I can think of some newer bands to explore for you.

Whoa whitespike, except for D...
Whoa whitespike, except for Daniel Johnston, whose buggy I was on from his Austin beginnings, I hardly know anyone in your Bandwagon. I'm old, just one step removed from parents who loved polka. Dylan has always been a primary constant for me and in all incarnations supplants the merely new, but as far as a few more modern day folks that make my day: Silver Jews, Cat Power, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cracker, etc., come to mind as the kind of more current bands/tunesmiths I truly enjoy.

Oh forgot to add, I am also familiar with dc wilson, from back in the day when he was making quite a name for himself as one of the Beach Boys.

music is hard to describe accurately, but here we go...
Most of the music I grew up on was my father's. My parents believed current music to be too evil most of the time. I'm 25 now, and still my biggest music vocabulary is from the 60s-70s. I have found a bit of modern music I enjoy.
The Shins- The first record is insanely good. It has hints of Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles, etc. but without feeling too retro. Definitely written out of inspiration, and not some failed attempt at resurrecting the past. The similarities there are honest, I think. The second record is good too, although unfortunately the newest is hard for me to swallow. Seems they got a little concered with commercialism.
My Morning Jacket - I only have one of their records and it's known to be their best. It is entitled "Z" I believe. The record is amazing. They have a very pleasing atmospheric and moody sound. The vibe (not neccessarily the sound) reminds me of early moody blues and the byrds ... again with a very fresh appeal. Not overly derrivitive.
Of Montreal - If you love brian Wilson and Syd Barrett you'll love them. Avoid the newest record. They have many records and they are all good except, again, they became rather concerned with making songs you can "bump" to with this last record. Embarrassing. Some of the earlier stuff is some of the best stuff I've heard.
Flaming Lips - Don't know if you have heard of them (they did start in the 80s), but "The Soft Bulletin" is a lyrical and musical masterpiece. Psychadelic, sometimes noisy, but well orchestrated folk. The album after that "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is also amazing. The new one sucks.
Blonde Redhead - One of the best newish bands. Check out "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons." It's hard to decribe. Ambient Noise over jangly electric guitars, analog keyboards, and haunting vocal melodies
Air - One of my favorites. Extremely ambient music with spare lyrics (sometimes English, but often in French). They are very groove oriented and they are analog keyboard heavy. It's perhaps the hippest "bedroom" music available. Their album "Moon Safari" is incredible.
American Anaog Set - A recently defunct band (the singer decided to pursue a doctorate in chemistry) that has recorded a few records in my band's studio. Relatively well known, and also extremely ambient, soothing, and molodic. Their sound consists of analog keyboards, clean jangly electric guitars, beat heavy drums almost exclusively played with brushes or maracas, and almost always a xylophone. "The Fun of Watching Fireworks" and "Know by Heart" are two of my favorites.
Spoon - Awesome rock and roll. period. The Zombies and The Kinks with a fresh, new sound. Start with "Kill The Moonlight" One of my favorite bands.
