Hi,
I am considering purchasing a piece of 50's Danish teak furniture (coffee table) from a gallery in Denmark through their online site for personal use. They would package and ship it to the US, but I would be responsible for any customs duty once arriving in the US. I have looked through the US Customs and Border Patrol website and there are a few articles/forms that address 1) purchases made while abroad, 2) household goods for returning residents, and 3) clarification of household goods from personal effects. Each form seems to address part of my situation but not a direct website purchase with immediate unaccompanied shipment to the US.
Based on what I have read, I think the coffee table would be free from any import duties, as per the Harmonized Import Tariff schedule ( http://www.usitc.gov/publications/docs/tata/hts/bychapter/0910C94.pdf).
I would like to have a better understanding of possible additional importing costs before committing to buying. Has anyone gone through this process and can confirm my understanding. Thanks, Carl

To classify the purchase as " used domestic furniture for personal use"
This will only work as long as the value of what you have bought is under the threashold for that catergory.
Us customs has tarifs for this on their website but ultimately it falls to the customs agent who views your documents upon arrival.
