Found 4 Knoll/Saarinen executive chairs on a curb side pickup (or as we say in Australia, 'hard rubbish collection')about 4 years ago. Faced with the dilemma do I re-upholster them or not. The one shown is probably the best. The others have moth damage etc...
These are really rare in Australia, and I would like to keep them, I just wouldn't know where to start with what fabric/what colour etc etc.
I have two questions. Firstly, they have the Knoll label on the bottom but there is no date on the label. Is there anyway to date these chairs?
Secondly, does the age of these chairs change their value (eg a 1957 chair compared to a 1982 chair?)
And, if any one can suggest what fabric, colour combination works well with these chairs, I'm open to suggestions!

.
Great find....love our 'hard days'. People throw out the most amazing stuff
Try these 'wankers' in Sydney for your fabric, wankers because they are sooooo 'oh do you have an appointment?' (queen-spoken-plum-in-throat-like)and you are treated like a peasant!...but they have amazing frabic used by a lot of large well known manufacturers.

I haven't a clue on the vintage of your sweet chairs, so sorry..
But since red and blue hopsack seem to be what I see the most on these lovely chairs...and taking into account the black finished legs, Knoll's "Fast Forward" textile in a the pewter shade would look nice. Or red/ or blue hopsack would be a safe choice.
All the best,
ps...but can you post a picture of the room that the chairs will be in?

Which room?
Thx guys, appreciate the advice!
Re; 'the room' Mark... that's a tough one... I'm thinking either as a second set of dining chairs (as I already have Featherston (mid century Aussie designer)scape chairs around my dining table) or in my front living room (which unfortunately is close to capacity with furnishings).
Sooo hard when you run outa room and you don't want the 'cluttered look'...
I'll get some shots put up soon.

Dilemma...
Hi guys. Going crazy with forum threads today!
I've dropped my Knoll/Saarinen executive side chairs off at the upholsterers, and tentatively decided on a wool blend grey fabric (see pic)
I almost fell off my Jacobsen desk chair when I got the quote!
I just happened to have chosen the most expensive fabric on earth.
I know everyone will have their own opinion but I just need to brain storm...
I'm not sure if we are allowed to discuss cost here so hypothetically if the chairs were going to cost, let's say AU$1K ($500 for fabric alone) to reupholster in this fabric, am I 'over-capitalising'?
I'm sure it's all about what's important to me, but I'm not really really precious about these chairs (they were found on a curb-side rubbish collection and have no sentimentality to me). Saying that, I do plan to keep them as they are indeed great chairs! My aim was to re-upholster them in a neutral fabric that would work with most settings (as I plan to use them around the house). I'd also like to think they would appeal to the general public if ever I should move them on.
So... should I search for a much cheaper fabric or go with my original choice and just work a bit harder to pay it off?
Hope I haven't broken any rules here, but I do really need other peoples opinion to help me decide on options.
Thx, Jules (Australia)

Here's the thing.
If you choose the expensive fabric that you love, you'll enjoy the chairs every time you use them and will quickly forget how much they cost.
If you choose less-expensive fabric that you don't like quite as much, you'll be reminded every day that your chairs could have been perfect but aren't.
Spend the money. Get what you want.

Good call fastfwd... I'm...
Good call fastfwd... I'm actually in the process of re-upholstering a chair for the second time in 5 years purely because I was never happy with the upholstery (and upholstery work). And yes, I've been reminded every day! 🙂
