Well
they certainly aren't a recent concept. The anciant celts hung their Solstice tree by the stump from the branches of larger trees. Something about confusing the dark and convincing the light to return and bring growth to the earth. I like the non conical shape, it seems like a real tree would look like that if you inverted it. Göd Yule!
Oh that's simple...
Go into your snug little house, light 100 billion candles, eat until you hurt, drink lots of vodka/wine/beer/glogg. Sleep. Wake. Drink lots of coffee. Repeat above steps. For full effect spend the first 3 weeks of December cooking and filling the house to the gills with greenery (real, natch). Somewhere along the process you wear candles on your head (tricky), but only if you're the oldest daughter. Finally you leave out cookies for a grumpy elf riding a goat...really.
A good place to find vintage...
A good place to find vintage aluminun christmas trees as well as vintage christmas ornaments is at www.kitschmasland.com This site is run by the same people who run the mid-century furniture store Good Eye in downtown Washington, D.C. That site can be found at www.goodeyeonline.com I have ordered from the several times and always find them helpful and professsional.
