Most of the sites I've found have the ugliest / blandest excuse for design I've ever seen.... and lots of it.
Where do I go to find high quality, contemporary design bar and counter furniture.... the type of stuff that would survive a commercial environment without looking like it???

Kartell and Magis for inexpensive.Kartell's Louis & Victoria Ghost + the matching stoll are v.good.
At Magis The Bouroullec brothers striped collection is refined and fresh.
For expensive you can either check cappellini (TATE series and low-pad/ ThonetVienna (classic thonet or the "Zchec" chair look suprisingly cool nowdays / or Emeco for ultra good quality alu stuff .
covet a covey
I love the Covey stool manufactured by Herman Miller. To me, it is a great modern interpretation of the height adjustable swivelling piano stool. Therefore you don't have to worry about bar height vs. counter height etc. The stool can adjust to anyone's preference.
It comes with a wood or metal top (I like the contrast of the warm wood tone with the metal base). The legs are designed with the lightness and elegance of the Eames eiffel base. Having multiples would create a similar aesthetic to the famous Eames photographs of grouped wire chairs.
