They're ugly. But they're comfortable and functional. I need a chair that's comfortable for reading, that provides support for my head and good posture while sitting up or reclining. I hate to admit this, but the La-Z-Boy seems to meet those needs better than any mid-century masterpiece.
The womb chair, for example, is so beautiful and it's comfortable for lounging. But it slopes back so far that I have to hold my head forward if I read a book or work on my laptop.
The Eames lounger also looks great, but its back is too short for me. I'm 6'.1" and my head hangs over the headrest.
It's so ugly. But it's so functional.
I saw a weird hybrid in a thrift shop once--
an Eames lounge knock-off only with a Lazy-Boy style fold-out "ottoman". It wasn't bad looking! Wish I'd photographed it, as I can't now find any pics online to show you.
EDIT: Plycraft recliner below (thanks tktoo-)

I have never had a chance to sit in any of them, but the adjustable recliners for France & Daverkosen by either Arne Vodder or Grete Jalk look like they could be pretty comfortable. A less expensive option could be the adjustable recliners that Kofod Larsen did.
