They're ugly. But they're comfortable and functional. I need a chair that's comfortable for reading, that provides support for my head and good posture while sitting up or reclining. I hate to admit this, but the La-Z-Boy seems to meet those needs better than any mid-century masterpiece.

The womb chair, for example, is so beautiful and it's comfortable for lounging. But it slopes back so far that I have to hold my head forward if I read a book or work on my laptop.

The Eames lounger also looks great, but its back is too short for me. I'm 6'.1" and my head hangs over the headrest.

It's so ugly. But it's so functional.

Yech.
Get a Poang lounger from IKEA and put a pillow behind your upper back if you want to be more upright. Either the chair or the chaise. (The chair is exquisitely comfortable, if you ask me.)

I saw a weird hybrid in a thrift shop once--
an Eames lounge knock-off only with a Lazy-Boy style fold-out "ottoman". It wasn't bad looking! Wish I'd photographed it, as I can't now find any pics online to show you.
EDIT: Plycraft recliner below (thanks tktoo-)

WHC, those pop up here fairly often.
Another Plycraft offering, I believe, and not bad comfort-wise. Ekornes is it, though. An hour in a showroom will have you reconsidering your commitment to aesthetics.

another option
Brent,
In lieu of the La-Z-Boy® you may want to look at the Arne Jacobsen, Oxford® high back lounge chair for Fritz Hansen. It appears to meet both of your stated physical requirements for lounge seating. This an excellent mid 60' design element.

Cassina make something which...
Cassina make something which feels (and looks, I remember it as being better looking...) much the same as the overstuffed recliners, no doubt way expesnive though.

I have never had a chance to ...
I have never had a chance to sit in any of them, but the adjustable recliners for France & Daverkosen by either Arne Vodder or Grete Jalk look like they could be pretty comfortable. A less expensive option could be the adjustable recliners that Kofod Larsen did.

.
The wink chair comes close.
Good for scattering books around at arms length.

Hello
As far as recliners go, I am partial to the Flight though I have never actually sat in one.
