So . . .
first you'll paint the piece of furniture black, and then paint colored and gilded designs on the black surface ?
If so, you might find that some of your paints won't cover the black easily -- especially transparent colors. If this is the case, you can paint the areas you wish to decorate with an undercoat of white or gray, before the final coat(s) of color.
You can experiment with each of your colors on a trial piece of material coated with the black paint, before attacking your workpiece. Different undercoats might work best with some of your colors.
