I always enjoy having things that are not for sale to the general public. As an example the Harry Allen, Ames Hotel (Boston) promotional mailer for Harry Allen Design (the same guy who designed the pig for Areaware). Another would be S. Pellegrino meets Missoni with the regular bottles only being available to the trade and the special packaging a gift to the press. The Harry Allen was easier to acquire than the Pellegrino (several cases at no charge) but both were possible.

I would be interested in seeing others promotional modern design items that they have been given. Of course the object is to get them at "no charge".

more freebies
I collect a great many things and another great promotional gift from my friends at Cartier is the Cartier, N.V. Vranken Cuvee De Cartier Champagne Brut promotional 100th anniversary bottle and the regular "private party" Cartier, N.V. Vranken Cuvee De Cartier Champagne Brut promotional bottle.
The design part comes in drinking these from Bertil Vallien, Millennium (2000) champagne flutes for Kosta Boda.

Merry Christmas
Arthur Sixpence,
Thank you for your kind and generous statement. I just like to have fun and with some people being so damn serious about the subject of design it too easy to provoke them into saying all sorts of crazy things.
I was told some years ago that I should love everybody, but there were some people that I may love from a great distance. You are not one of those people.
Merry Christmas to you and all the other DA posters (including Olive) and so I do not have any additional troubles, Happy Hanukkah where it applies.

I think what Ark MEANS to say, is:
My friends call me Ark.
YOU may call me Mr. Of Decorative Arts.

Ark, I do
have a collection of things one cannot buy. When I had my bookstore, the publishers would send me advance copies of books that were being published in the upcoming season.
I saved them all, even when the books were crap, simply because advanced copies are one step "closer to the author's hand" and, therefore, more valuable, should the book become a bestseller.
My only regret is that J.K. Rowling never issued advanced copies. I could have paid cash for the Swiss chalet I am shopping for and possibly even finagled a bottle of your champagne.
Happy Holidays, Ark, to you and yours!

Books are great
Riki,
I enjoyed the story that the late Stanley Marcus told about his collecting. He had so much that his wife started to bother him about buying more, at which point he decided to collect minature books so he could carry them in his pocket and place them in his night stand without notice.
An example would be the Somesuch Press - Christmas Stamps from Around the World edition of 800 signed copies, miniature book for Neiman-Marcus. They were not free but I could not resist and I purchased all the different titles they had at a "Last Call" sale.
Merry Christmas

Why people collect promotional items?
I find interesting the subject, because I didn,t, (and don,t yet) understand this issue. This world of promotional gifts and how people could be interested. Then later, some items could be expensive, when some time ago was free. So Ark put part of the answer. Anyway not that clear yet.
I was also thinking on open a thread about it, so was nice to saw it.
Part of my understand/not understand is explain in the following video, It,s from Cha-Cha-Cha when they emerged from the under-artist-world. (Now is no more under, so not the same).
Was from 1995, when was created the Mercosur, the South American Community, And so, is about the opportunity given to create the "Convention of Mercosur Batmans"
Between the 0.09 and 0.39 seconds Argentine batman comment to Brazil/Uruguay and Paraguay Batmans about the promotional leather bag/folder given at the Batman's conference:
-Do have all have one of this bags/folders? In Last year conference they gave us one that was the same!.
I'll tell you what can you do with this one: Here where is the text ,,3rd. conference bla-bla,,
you can put a sticker over the inscription. And when you have a birthday or for Christmas, and don't have a present, you give this gift: You'll be a Dandy!

RIGOLLEAU pieces
Here are two examples of glass promotional items that though I like them, don,t share that passion.
To pay those prices, I'd prefer other pieces.
