My two cents
If it helps.
Fuck all - if you love the Noguchi, get it. Whitespike and I own the Eame's Lounge and that's just as ubiquitous. The popularity of the Noguchi table doesn't undermine it's sublime beauty.
Second - maybe the glass option isn't the best. The Nakashima will bring back memories of New England for you. Or the Risom amoeba - very light and organic. (I've always wanted an Amoeba table against my Neo...but sadly that has been vetoed - so I have a more squared off Risom table) Or the Saarinen oval table (which I don't think has been mentioned yet?)
And third - if no Noguchi, and glass it must be...maybe the Fontana Arte coffee table for a bit of whimsy? Or LeCorbusier?
Hi Lucifersum!
Nice to hear from you. How's Boston? Thanks for weighing in on this. You and whitespike are my design blood-brothers, so I really appreciate you input.
The wheeled one is Gae Aulenti, right? Lovely table, but that one is sure to eat my ankles! I've evolved through this thread away from the glass. My main reasoning was to showcase the rug and make sure the smaller living room in the new place doesn't feel crowded. The table is going to have to live with the Neo sectional, the Neo club chair, a Saarinen Womb with ottoman and a long credenza cum media center. But the CTM is very light without appearing airy-fairy so right now I'm leaning towards it if I can find one.
But you are right the Saarinen oval hasn't come up and I'll have to think about that one...it might be an option and certainly easier to get my hands on.
How 'bout this one?
Other nice stuff on his Web site.

I love almost every table posted so far, and you already seem to have swayed from the glass top, but I also think you should stick to your first alternative.
In my experience, when I end up where I started it usually feels right, at least for some time. And when it no longer does I tend to have a better understanding of what I really want.
So get it and own it, if only to get it out of your system.
There's a lot of wisdom in that, Gustaf
I've decided that my best course of action is inaction...for the moment. I'm going to wait until we get into the space and see how it all feels. I might take a picture of my room minus a coffee table and photoshop in some of the table discussed here and see how they look to me.
The Noguchi was never quite right, somehow...I guess that's why I didn't buy it. So we shall see....
.
I visited a quarry yard last week looking for some marble and there were all these irregular shaped pieces of stone (not this image, the slate there had cleaved flat) and thought that some of them would be very handsome sitting in a wooden cradle.
Perhaps there might be some stone local to where you are? I think a table like that could be quite nice in a Nakashima-ish way.
Looky looky, Olive...
Original CTM with the early Domes glides for $950. Ash finish, but still very handsome.

"Rounded shape, glass ..."
Going back to Olive's original spec, there's an economical (in every sense) piece called Makoda on page 44 of the new CB2 catalog. Sorry, can't do a picture right now.
