I bought a couple of cream white sideshells of ebay a long time ago. They proved to be in much worse condition than they appeared in the images (i have learned to be more careful about my ebay purchases since then...). There are no real damages, but there is dirt and especially so at some of the rough edges.

What do you use to clean your Eames shells? I want to get them clean, without destroying the surface of the chairs...

Alex

Others may be better qualified to answer this, but I had the very problem you have. I used soap and water with a coarse sponge, and then polished them with turtle wax.

For marks use a pen eraser
A bic pen eraser(blue color eraser) works great for marks, paint scrapes, and other hard to remove blemishes. Use pressure and it cleans up nice.

dont use abrasive cleaners
what ever you do, dont use anything with abrasives. Soap and water with a sponge/soft scrub brush should work good.

Thanks to all of you for your helping suggestions...
I will get working on these chairs asap and see if I can improve them a little. They all look ok, just a little marks here and there, but since they are white, it shows so much worse than on other colors...

white fiberglass
Let me retract my suggestion of using Turtle Wax since your chairs are white. Turtle Wax is light green, which will show if your chairs have scratches and you aren't able to remove every bit of the wax from them.

Hi there!
I've recently seen on a web site specialized in boats products some products aimed at fiber glass cleaning and refurbishing (for old fiber glass boat shells I guess...) did anyone ever tried it on HM fiber glass chairs?? or does anyone have an opinion on this kind of product??? I'm wondering wether to buy it or not to clean my chairs (I own a Nelson DAF chair and a few DAX chairs that would need a good cleaning and polisihing too...)

Perhaps its best to learn, accept objects of some age and use will never have the pristine, fresh out of the box look? This is esp true with... fiberglass it has ,when new, a crisp finish/look...

You're right but there'e a difference in my opinion between the nice patina of age and ugly stains and dirt, paint drips or pen graphities that can be removed... My goal here is not to have my chairs as new but to have them clean and somewhat in a shape that such icons deserve.

I have used
I have used some fiberglass cleaners/polish on these chairs. Gelgloss is a useless product, doesnt do anything. I've had decent results with NuFinish (in the auto care aisle 0f my hardware store). These are good only as polishes after you've cleaned the dirt off. These will help hide some of the scratches & minor flaws.

I agree that the vintage patina is part what makes these chairs more attractive than the recent repros. Still, I want to get rid of the worst marks and get some of the shine back to the shells.
Now I have a bigger problem... I just recieved some armshells in the mail and two of them were damaged in transport. I think it will be covered by the insurance, but it is still annoying.
Now these are not just dirty, they actually had some sharp object cut a hole through the packaging and make a pretty nasty mark in two of the shells. The marks is 1,5 cm long and 2-3 mm deep each.
I will still be able to use the chairs, but I would like to fill the marks with some kind of plastic to smoothen out the sharp edges of the marks.
Does anyone have an idea of what to use? The chairs all have a nice vintage patina that I don't want to change, but these damages really annoy me...
best, a
