pulls
I found the pulls at home depot. They appear to be exactly the same as the originals, which is nice because my kitchen cabinets use the same pulls and some of them need to be replaced. The funny thing is that they're made by Primeline, a company based in the town I live in. I'm going to go the route of making new panels and storing the originals. I bought a sheet of 1/4 MDF that is very similar to the original masonite. Next step is to find a durable paint to use on the panels. I'll try to get some pictures up when I'm done.

Excellent choice.
I was hoping you'd take that route. You could even put two different colors on the two sides of each panel. Then, by reversing the cup pulls and turning the panels over, you'd have a seasonal variation in the appearance of the cabinet.
In any event, be sure to use a similar coating on both sides of the panels, in order to minimize the chance of warpage. More than a chance, really, but a virtual certainty of distortion if this step is skipped !
Sliding panel doors are by far the most efficient and economical choice for cabinet doors, it could be argued. No hinges necessary, and no problems with misalignment due to cabinet racking -- and virtually instantaneous mounting and demounting.
