Was that a very early interview?
At this point in his career, nobody would forget that Gehry's an architect if he were to design a few more chairs. It might even be expected of him. I mean, when's the last time you heard of an architect who DIDN'T also want to design all the furniture in his buildings? And in extreme cases, also the lighting, wall treatments, silverware, doorknobs.... It's not an uncommon impulse.
Also, Gehry DOES still design furniture -- benches, mostly -- for his buildings. You can't buy those pieces from Knoll, but still.
And besides, he doesn't seem to mind being known as a jewelry designer....
Anyway, I like just about everything he's ever designed in metal, and I buy all of it that I can find.
Heath, was your one-word comment meant to be read as praise for Gehry's furniture, or as disapproval of his architecture?
When I first see this image...
When I first see this image for this Sydney University of Technology site I was sure this was him just seeing how silly he could push one of his designs.
Of course a government dept fell for it but we'll see when it's finished.
I really hope it's better in the flesh.
fun to have

These pieces are fun to own, but difficult to use.
I had my cabinet make cut Ettore Sottsass Bacterio (5365) black & white laminate for Abet Laminati to match the various top sizes and bond this to black laminate for removable covers of the Frank Gehry Easy Edges nesting tables. They are now usable with less apprehension of spills.
I like all the items from this collection. Buy one and enjoy.
fastfwd...
fastfwd... it was an article from the early or mid 90's. I want to say it was around when he got the Pritzker prize?? i could be wrong though. Ill look for it later today. but his comment on furniture was more along the lines that he had had some success with selling his pieces and it scared him because he wasnt ready to be a furniture designer, he wanted to focus on architecture, or something along those lines. so i guess it was earlier in his career, when he was just starting out?
Edit" sorry i went back and re read your whole post but yeah i agree chances are that was before he became established. I'm sure he could do a whole line of furniture now and nobody would forget he's an architect.
