I have been in touch
with Pastoe and what they said was "Birch is Birch" so why would we stain it in a darker colour ? I do not know anything about wood but if I was going to stain something then I would go for a cheaper type of wood ?
This is what I mean...a birch cabinet that has been stained...bad...very bad..
cheers

Well Jim
The finish on the legs looks pretty even and on close-up I have the impression the paint is not only old, but factory-done.
The golden hue where the black seems to have rubbed of, could this be the surface wich touched the floor, and later on they stuck on the felt pads, so this 'exposed' pieces of wood could yellow with age?
The legs were definitly removed, before they were sprayed and it seems no botchjob. I'm assuming this was a special order from a client, who like the cabinet to match the black legs of (for instance) his chairs?
Hello B.J.
I know you are very good with wood and wood working....the photo gives a poor representation of how it actually looks in real life...even I look good from a distance...
I do not beleive that they would of sprayed Birch with a Walnut stain..take a look at this Cees Braakmans Birch-Walnut cabinet..they would not of allowed this to pass quality control ? even if the client had wanted it...but if you say that they would then I can beleive it...to my untrained eye it looks like a rush job..
cheers
Jim
ps.
did you go to the design market in Gent ?
Only, it's not walnut or a dark hue varnish.
I would say it's black, as is the tray of your trolley.
Seems same finish to me?
(I'm not so good with wood, but I'm very interested 🙂
I didn't go to Gent, didn't make it. Were you there?
I went a couple of times in the past, great to see some nice items, but I like the adventure of finding things disgarded or left, so the concept of the market is a bit lost to me 🙂
But nevertheless a great initiative!
