Hello fellow design addicts. I have these two beautiful chairs that I have a feeling are vintage Cassina and that they are possibly Gio Ponti or Gio Ponti inspired. However, I'm coming up short in my research.
The type of wood, the sharp bend at the back of the chairs remind me of the lines used in Ponti's "Superleggera" chairs. Also, the "C" on the sticker could be Cassina, it's similar to the Cassina sticker with the red "C" from the 1950s, but I've never seen this sticker before so perhaps this is earlier?
I'd love some expert advice. I'd love to know if I'm wrong or right in my assumptions. What they might be worth and the year (approx) that they were made.

These are gorgeous chairs!
I've looked through my Gio Ponti books and haven't seen anything that looks like this. I'm not sure if it's a Cassina chair either - the old Cassina label featured a fat red 'C' with a small black 'a' inside it.

Philippe Starck...
...is a great shout. I recognised the resemblance to Starck's plastic Louis 20 chairs, bit wasn't aware of Placide of Wood. How interesting. Were they one-offs?
I'm now wondering whether these chairs are c.1990s rather than earlier. There's something about the quality of the finish too which is very distinctive in 1990s furniture...

i see why you might question that...there is a chance they were refinished at some point giving them more shine, but in general they feel older, the joining, the labels, the screws....I still think they are earlier, but I'm open! So grateful for everyone's helpful advice!

adlib, any chance we could have a close up photo of the joints on the legs (near the seat) ? if they are machined finger joints then they are almost certainly later rather than earlier.
If you want to include photos of the screws etc, then please do so ? this can only help.
Then hopefully we can get closer to identifying the designer. I'm intrigued by this chair!

I am humbled...thank you so much. I'm glad others saw this as a challenge to ID as much as I did. There is detail underneath that I'd never actually noticed before. There is a cut away by the back legs, and also one either side of the main reinforcement bar under the seat. I've added a bunch more detail pics in the link provided. Can't wait to hear what you find. 🙂

For what it's worth, I suspect these chairs to be circa 1990s or later in their manufacture. The machined joints lead me to think so.
The similarity to Philippe Starck's wooden pieces lead me to think they are good quality imitation pieces, probably produced to order by a modern furniture or interiors shop jumping onto the bandwagon for similar looking furniture. Or maybe they were produced by a contract furniture firm for restaurants and suchlike.
Either way, good luck with selling them. They're distinctive and attractive chairs and look to be well made, so I'm sure you won't have a problem finding a buyer.
