I get the impression that people on this forum are very sensitive when they feel somebody is trying to profiteer out of the collective knowledge. But I ask this question as it's important and so I hope to not get too many cynical replies. I'm nearing the end of my degree and the necessity to find employment is starting to manifest itself.
I've been thinking about what I would like to do and one of those things involves engaging with awesome midcentury design objects. The careers that I can see related to that are obviously selling the stuff - either in a self employed capacity, or as part of a larger business (Christies? Sotheby's? or some smaller retailer) or renting stuff out to TV/film.
Is there anything else?
Can anybody in these lines of work give me any advice on how to get started, and whether, having done it for years, it's actually worth it? Would you do it all again if you had the chance? And if your kids said 'daddy I want to do what you do' would you tell them to get more 'lofty' ambitions?
What are the limitations of the career? I'm guessing the inability to reproduce stock to fit demand would be one. Is there career 'progression'? Is the market dominated by part-timers? What's the money/tax/job security and access to credit like?
