I just bought this off ebay, however, I have trouble dating the chair.

According to the seller, the cushion is not down/feather filled and is foam, so that means it's manufactured in the 70s, correct?

Also, did I over pay?

The only advice I can offer is always bring chocolates and flowers.

Providing a link will get you to first base, too.

Listing
states 'it was reupholstered by Herman Miller'
So I can't see how the upholstery type could date the chair.

But the cushion and the frame are the original. I don't think leather is used in dating, it's generally, tag, wood, and screws.

The shape of the arms is consistant with early '70's.
Something is funny about the position of the back, though. You might want to check the shock mounts for possible impending failure or bad previous repair.
The rosewood has pretty good grain, but a bit too glossy a finish for my taste and the leather looks a little new next to the wear evident on other areas of the set, but neither are big deals. You didn't buy it for a museum, did you?
All in all, yeah, you overpaid. So what? Did you buy it for investment or to make you happy?

Overpaid?
I don't think that you overpaid. $3600 is what they go for retail (especially in So. Cal). Its a great chair.

Weed, look again.
The lower back shell on Alpha's 670 is too far forward in relation to the seat pan and looks close enough to it so as to make contact when in use. It's not correct, IMO.
I agree that the pair in your example appear to have been mucked with. They seem to suffer from the opposite extreme.
Perhaps I'm simply accustomed to the way mine is positioned (back mounts replaced by HM) and assume it to be as intended?
