Is there a way to whiten it? It belongs to the GN clock 2271, black. I have the same clock in orange and the face is beautifully white.

Thanks!

I have been trying to post the pics, but the website keeps directing me to an "error" page that says "welcome to the new designaddict portal." Here's trying again. Thanks for any help!

Is it ABS plastic? If so,...
Is it ABS plastic? If so, you could try retrobright. Lots of instructional videos on youtube how to make/use it. I've never done it myself.

Hi
Another option might be Magic Eraser, which is mildly abrasive.

yellowed plastic
I 'google'd ..... retrobright-home-wikispaces ...and found a home made formula to reverse the yellowing. I haven't tried it yet though.

I've successfully
whitened ABS plastic (assorted vintage Braun components yellowed with age) by completely submerging them in plain old hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore.
Granted, it took at least 2-3 weeks of soaking as I recall, but worked perfectly. No Herculean effort was required and it cost less than $2 to do.

thanks!
It's a thin plastic. Does that sound like ABS? I am going to go out and get the oxyclean today. If the retrobright doesnt work, I'll try the magic eraser.

I've tried Magic Eraser on a test piece of ABS. For me it left the finish slightly dulled ie. what looked like superfine scratches on the surface... it didn't look good. As woody said Magic Eraser is mildly abrasive...

I also have this same clock in white on black background as shown. Mine has a 3 inch deep metal side housing that is also painted in white, and the yellowing on the edge metal is about the same as on the plastic.
I am wondering:
1) is yours also yellowing on the side?
2) How would you go about de-yellowing a painted white metal surface without messing up the paint? Can it be done at all?
3) I don't mind the "ivory" look to my clock, as the yellowing is subtle, so I probably won't try and clean it, but it would be good to know just the same.

Yes, Eameshead the rim is also yellowing, but doesnt appear as bad or at least as noticeable. Look at my orange one - it is so white. I am wondering if the previous owner whitened it and how? The only thing is the sticker is still on the face.
I have the star face in the sun right now with the retrobright soln. on it. I am a little nervous, but figure if the worst happens, hopefully it can be fixed...

Please report on how it went with the retrobright.
Have been thinking about using it myself.

thanks rockybird
That is certainly white! And also beautiful.
It is my sense that the orange and white version of this clock is a bit more rare than our black and white ones. (I have also seen this clock with a blue background on one occasion, about 20 years ago).
I hope the current treatment works out for you, and keep us posted! Thanks

it worked but needs another treatment
Well, it worked and is noticeably whiter, but definitely needs another treatment. I will need to find something big enough to soak it in, as the tips of the arms are still yellow.
Eameshead, I always thought that the black was more rare. I have not seen many in black, but I seen a lot in orange.
