Its a very nice, simple desk of blonde woode with one bank of 3 drawers on the left. No chair. Its in a thrift store and they are asking $40 for it. I like it. Who can fill me in on Paul McCobb? The forum archive has a few fragments, but not enough to give much insight. Is $40 a fair price, too much, or too little?

Better get there before me! I love Mccobbs planner line and that desk has been climbing in value lately. Good ones bring 400-500 on ebay. The finishes were clear or natural, then a darker tone called Tobbaco, then a walnut finish over Canadian maple. The ring type pulls usually are more desired, but for that price, I would buy them all day long. Just check for wood splitting at the glue lines, and the finish can be redone.
.
For some strange reason the desks are among the most common(to find)...and underated items of the PLANNER GROUP.It came in black, often the most sought finish.40.00 is nothing, the maple in it is worth more.In the 50s Bloomingdales N.Y.C. had a Paul Mccobb shop filled with his designs, shop was also his design.Desk is a great simple sturdy design...shakeresque...

Hi
Its interesting trying to find the definitive scoop on the Planner Line. Its real genius is the scale, proportions, and group formations. I just bought the earliest catalog of the Planner series. The art work in the illustration is sharp.
I did notice something interesting in th early 50's... the 3 original finishes included only natural, tobacco, and black. Then walnut was addded later in the 50s. I wish there was a book of how to date the brands, labels, and production nuances.
Great op to sell a book!
Two More McCobb desk Questions:
1. Did he design chairs for these desks? If so, does anyone have a link for pictures?
2. This desk does not have ring-shaped pulls. It has pointy, slightly conic shaped drawer pulls? Do the pulls indicate a later or earlier version of the desk?
Yes, I'm buying it. And I have no idea where to put it. 🙂
thanks James and whitespike...
These pics greatly help me.
A really weird (frankly, very homely IMHO) office type chair came with this McCobb desk. I will post a picture of it in a few days. It has four rollers (metal hoods with plastic wheels)suggesting its an older chair. the arms and back are all one vinyl covered piece (beige with brown buttons and brown piping--can't if its a reupholstery or not, but I doubt it). They mount on a pair of chromed tubes that rise up from the pedestal in U-shape if the U were turned on its side with the open end facing forwards. The seat is unusually comfortable. The pedestal is comprised of four chromed metal tubes that join together and rise up to support the seat cushion. The seat has a tensioner nob but no height adjustment that I can see. It is a low seat that is ideal for sliding in under the McCobb desk, which is kind of short itself. FWIW, the desk measures about 29.5 inches tall, 18 inches wide and 4 feet long.
This office chair kind of reminds me of some office chair I've seen some where, but I can't think by who? I can't find any markings on it anywhere, so its probably some cheapy, but I just feel like I've seen one some where before.
