Hello all. Im a long time reader but first time poster. I purchased an Eames DAR off CL today for 75 bucks and it's black. It has the 4 star early base, it swivels and it also has a tilting mechanism. How rare is the color black and/or the tilting mechanism? I don't think I've seen one listed on Ebay with in either the color and/or/with the tilt feature. It also has a nice shiny patina wherein flecks of the white fiberglass is coming through the color. The seller picked it out of his apartment building's laundry room about 10 years ago. Any information is appreciated. Sorry, I will post a pic just as soon as I can find my phone or camera! Thanks all in advance

Not rare
Technically what you have is a DAT (Dining height, armshell, Tilt base) They are nice, but not rare. The black was a standard color and the tilt mechanism was a standard option on the office chairs as well.
The 4 star base was changed in the late 80s so I don't know if it qualifies as "old". A better way to date would be whether or not your chair has a universal base (post 1968) or a contract base (post 1958 - pre 1968).
A contract base has thin profile tines that terminate in a round 'paw' into which the glide is set. The Universal base is more sculptural and fluid, with a thicker rounded tine that terminates in a teardrop shaped paw.

Thank you!
Thank you for the insight on this. I didnt think it was rare but I have yet to see it on Ebay or anywhere else. I did try to research on the web, but as one knows, the minute you type in Eames+chair+shell or other keywords, one ends up searching through the proverbial haystack.
I really appreciate the feedback!
