A few weeks ago, I picked up an Eames aluminum group lounge and a soft pad. I drove a couple hours to get to the seller. We had very good conversations about furniture and collecting and he ended up giving me back $40 for gas as I paid him. It really wasn't the amount that mattered, but rather, the wonderful feeling it gave me. That was indeed pretty neat.
Mobler armchair
It was on its way out of my apartment building with the trash. It needed a very small repair (loose joint) and had very substantial paint loss, both easily fixed.
It's this model, but in black:

As I brought it back into the building from the curb, the front-desk guy nodded and said, "That's a nice chair." Yup.
who rescued who
Mark,
I found my cat "Bucket Cat" sleeping a Home Depot orange bucket.
Things have changed. He now sleeps in a Michael Young, Dog House for Magis, eats from the Miriam Mirri, Tigrito cat bowl for Alessi and we store his food in the Stefano Giovannoni, Crick dry cat food container for United Pets.
Caper, Koler (rescue) and Pepper (rescue) my dogs live even larger. I know the names Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada have meaning for you (leashes). They too have Stefano Giovannoni, Crock dry dog food containers for United Pets and their meals are served in Miriam Mirri, Lupita pet dishes for Alessi.
I do like the bumper sticker that says "who rescued who".

and i am still at it
everyone thinks i am joking when i tell them the contents of my house in the last 20 years cost less than someone's i-phone annual bill (except the le corbusier lounge by cassina and the braun sk55 radio/record player by hans gugelot and dieter rams which are almost free).
80's and 90's
there was a time before the internet, before computers and mobile devices invaded the home, these were the stuff that were being left out on the street or construction sites. universities and corporate offices and public libraries being renovated used to give their cast offs away or everything goes to the landfill and most did. christmas morning cast offs...retailers mantra-this year model is in and last year model is out, disposablity was the norm. at the time, having "retro" stuff and furniture was for the under priveleged, looked down upon and considered by most as low brow.
