These are a few books that are reasonably priced and will give a good overview into MCM furniture. They are pretty focused on the most well-known pieces, the classics.

If you want a couple books that go back from the turn of the century to today's modern era, which cover a broader range of objects and designers, I would suggest the following:

Modern Furniture - Andrea Mehlhose & Martin Wellner
The Century of Modern Design - Lilliane and David M. Stewart
If you are interested in more information on specific designers, I would point you towards Taschen's line of books on architects/designers. They are cheap, well put together, and offer a good overview.
