I recently bought a Bertoia diamond chair. I believe it to be authentic but really have no experience with them and I also am not sure how detailed or what tricks knockoffs might be employing. So I was hoping someone could let me know based off pictures on my flickr account if i have the real deal.
Reasons i think it is authentic -
There was a tag that was between the frame and the upholstery (it appears to be a sticker that no long stuck to the back of the cushion)that says distributed by Knoll. A close up of the tag is in the photo set. The back cross bar of the base also has 'Knoll' embedded into the metal. (also pictured although hard to read in the picture due to chrome reflection)
The welds and edge detail of the wires seem extremely high quality (in my novice opinion)and the chair is rock solid but very light.
Reasons they might be fake.
The detail that attaches the frame to the wire mesh is not what I was expecting. Less elegant than the rest of the chair. I figured it would be welded not attach via hardware. Lot of pics on flickr.
I am not sure about the bent...
I am not sure about the bent wire that's attached to the screw, as far as I know the originals has plates not bent wires, but the base are always attached by nuts and bolts. knew this from all the bertoias I owned and have seen. fabrics can be bought from knoll and installed at any wire chairs be it original or repro.
It has to be
It looks as if the the dimensions are perfect, many companies screw that up when replicating, also its stamped knoll. Endless its a chinese rip off with a fake knoll stamp it has to be real, I would think.
The only thing that is off about it is the screws seem to be different and the coating on the metal is strange looking to me, but it just may be the picture.
nice chair!
