Bertoia Bird mounting bar irregularity  

Hey guys,
There's a Bird Chair auction winding down that I'm thinking about -- there seems to be something possibly strange going on where the shock mounts...mount. that little short piece of wire isn't original is it? I'm thinking it's evidence of a broken mounting bar that's been reinforced...thoughts? Some pics of other chairs online don't have it, one other I saw did...(the thing that first caught my attention here, incidentally, is the fact that the one on the right hand side (look at from the rear) appears to be crooked or bent).
