The slate is really nice. Just a bit of mineral oil every few months and it looks good as new. Keep in mind, there are many different slates available. Colors, thickness, movement all vary. I guess it's like any other stone. Took us a few stone yards to find the slabs we liked. We then had the edges finished with a blow torch to create a cleaner, smoother but still natural edge.

you might
consider soapstone also. Fairly available, comes in many variations. Best part about it is that it is almost indestructible. Won't stain, won't pick up odors, can't burn. There is a reason they use it in labs.
My mom has a house overlooking the ocean on the OTHER coast. She threatens to sell it. I threaten to chain myself to the porch railing.

re: soapstone
Another fantastic thing about soapstone is that you can cut and install the stone yourself. I just did this in my new house with soapstone from the Alberene quarry. Even cut holes for an undermounted double kitchen sink (black fire clay). Came out absolutely beautiful.

You have a
beautiful home Jes...! Sorry, I don't have to time to attribute a lot, but just looking at your house makes me feel I'm on vacation. Very cozy, and inviting. Gotta get back to work now..

wires
Incredible house. I love the fact that the exterior is being left to weather naturally.
We have similar tongue and groove ceilings. Running wires to lights is a challenge. Do you have space above to run wires or are you running them along the beams?

Thanks SX-70. As for lighting, we replaced most of the existing fixtures (with period appropriate fixtures) so we did not need to change the location of many fixtures in the ceilings. That said, there were a couple of places where we did have to pull some ceiling planks to add additional lighting. Fortunately, there was space for insulation between the roof and the ceiling boards and to run wiring.

Did you ever post any in situ photos of your egg chair and Jacobsen sofa after getting them back from the upholsterer?
Were the photos for this article taken some time ago, as I was under the impression you had sold the green sofa a while back?

roof
Jesgord,
Back to the house....
Did you add the roof decks or was that part of the original plan?
Looks like a flat or very low slope roof on the other sections. What did you go with for the roofing material?
Sorry for all the questions...we are in the initial stages of planning a remodel our home and we'd love to add a roof deck...and we have a flat roof! We are meeting with an architect soon and your place is inspiring to say the least.

I don't think your tv is too big so much as it's in an inopportune spot in the room. A smaller one wouldn't look that much better in that location if you ask me.
My own Wegner J16 rocker is just to the left of my laptop when I look up, which is kind of weird when I look at the photo of yours in that room!

SX-70 Roofing in rubber...
SX-70 Roofing in rubber membrane. Decks are Cedar done in alternating square sections. The one in the center that was mis-alligned has since been put in the correct direction. In our case, the engineer we worked with advised that we install steel plates along the original roof beams for extra support
