We're thinking of pairing up a 47" Saarinen table with Jacobsen Series 7 chairs in beech. (4 to start off with, 6 of them eventually). They look great in the pics I've seen. I'm just wondering what others' experiences have been with these chairs. Are they reasonably comfortable dining chairs? Are they sturdy? I have a few friends that are 200 lbs+...will these chairs have any issues with them? fm
Don't know about recent reissues
Don't know about recent reissues, but I own a set of 4 teak ones from the 60s and they're all in good shape. Still very flexible. Only one of them has a crack across the narrowest part but it's in the top layer of the veneer only, no structural damage there.
A friend of mine who's pretty heavy likes to lean back in them... this worried me at first, but I didn't see any problems on inspection afterwards.
I find them pretty comfortable myself.
Hope this helps.
Before the Jacobsen chairs, I...
Before the Jacobsen chairs, I had these "kangaroo" chairs by Ernst Moeckl that sat nicely around the circular tabletop.
I eventually replaced them because I broke the backs of two of the buggers. Apparently the ABS material goes brittle over the years. Plus the charm of their somewhat gimmicky appearance had worn off by then.
Jacobsen 7 chairs a winner
hi I use 6 Jacobsen series 7 chairs
every morning in my breakfast room and i love them very comfortable !! I bought a new styled Milo Baughman breakfest table with polished steel and frosted green glass and the 6 chairs really complement it they are the blond wood, .
I had in my warehouse 6 Eames DCM chairs that i almost recovered and I also had 6 shell chairs 4 side and 2 arm chairs , that was a tough choice which to use, Even though I did have to go out and buy the series 7 chairs i felt it was still cheaper than redoing the Eames chairs with fabric and re upholstery since they were in such a need of redoing .
7 chairs
Our friends in Copenhagen have a set of these chairs but with fabric on the seats and backs. They don't like the way that the wooden ones are a bit slippery. You do tend to slide forward on them---maybe if you slouch a bit? Anyway, that's why they like their fabric seats better.
There are lots of new knockoffs of these in Denmark, by the way. The Home Depot-type stores there sell them along with a knockoff of a particular table whose name I can't think of at the moment. They're in lots of homes, too.
digups
Do me a favor and tell your heavy friend to not lean back that the chairs will break!!! My daughter had a 22 nd birthday party last week and I have the Eames wires from the 50's with the effiel tower bases all around the swimming pool. i just finished having them re welded and powder coated (they look great)
I saw one of the heavy dudes leaning back i went over, did not hesitate and told him in my nicest and calm voice to please do not lean back as that chair can not stand your extra weight as it is over 50 years old and just off life supports , and i would not want to see you on the concrete as we have rather poor health care insurance and could not afford for you to have a broken back on our property ... He got the message very nicely...
I know this (kinda heavy)...
I know this (kinda heavy) guy who leaned just a bit too far on my friends' 7 chair while at a dinner party and the chair simply cracked at the back. Snap!
-He felt really bad for my friend of course and decided that he would help her with the dishes after the meal... -Unfortunately he then also he managed to drop a whole pile of expensive plates on the floor...

I read on this forum that in Fritz Hansen stores all through Europe they have tons of colors stacked up and some one made the comment that they could not give them away, in the colors ...
They said what you said they were not made very well and were flakey .. I bought mine on line overpaid for sure, (anytime i cannot get a deal I feel i overpaid) but i did go over mine with a fine tooth comb and they are perfect with no flakeing , Fritz Hansen is going out of there way to talk about cheap repoductions on there website and showing how they are smashing them like fake Rolexs but I
bet the fake Fritz Hansens are just as good as what they are putting out. if everyone is making comments that they are flaking , Shame on them that is a great company, i can not believe they are resting on there reputation they should be working on there bread and butter products , like the series 7 chairs and not worry about the high dollar egg chairs
