Some Photos
Hi all,
Here some photos of the chair I'm looking at. It was pulled out of a dumpster! I've been able to clarify some details.... Apparently Fritz Hansen has said it dates from 1958 - 1960. What do you guys think?
There is no tilt.
The base swivels.
The hard foam is stamped FH, made in Denmark.
There is no mark/number/etc cast in the aluminum base.
There is a rather small screw hole in the bottom center of the base.
It may or may not have had a seat cushion.
New foam and upholstery will be required (obviously).

That is obviously a real egg chair
... however, I have to disagree with the dates you were given. The thicker plastic foot glides suggest post-1960 to me. The earliest chairs had black feet which were a tad thinner.
Buy it, have it reupholstered correctly, and enjoy it.

Thanks Pegboard! Does anyone have a close-up photo of an early plastic foot? It's really hard to tell the difference from photos online. Also, is the width of the upper chair base a give-away of age? Sometimes it is the same width as the aluminum, sometimes it is thinner...

I am also interested Anders
That is why I asked about it when I noticed it in the corner of their photo. However I felt it in poor taste to ask them to sell something they are enjoying and living with in their home.
Had they expressed a willingness to sell it, I certainly would have spoken up. But if you read the rules of the forum, you will find that buying or selling is forbidden. The "radar" area of the site is where you can either advertise items for sale or post a notice that you want to buy particular items.
It is also considered unsavory by many members of the forum for someone who has not been contributing to the discussion to come onto the forum and solicit for commercial purposes.

Sorry...
I was not aware it was forbidden to ask about buying.

Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair
I believe that I am in possession of an original Egg Chair. When my Great-Uncle Bill passed away in 2009 he left descriptions of each piece he was leaving to family members and according to information hand-written by him, his executor (his brother, my Great-Uncle Richard), told me that this chair was one of his favorite pieces and that he has had it for decades. It sat in his bedroom and was his reading chair. I have pictures if anyone would like to see it and maybe someone can tell me for certain if it is authentic. It has no visible markings anywhere and does not have a tilting mechanism but it does swivel. Beautiful orange wool with matching cushion, matching ottoman and two orange armchair covers. It's also incredibly lightweight.

Dear All,
A great forum with lot of useful info..
I need to find replacement parts for the egg chair tilt mechnism, the one i am working on the not an original but has the chrome handle to adjust the tilt tension. the small arm where this handle screws into has been bent and i am working on a way to bend it back but it is much better to get a complete tilt mechanism.
I searched online and could not find a supplier or an info about where i can get these mechanisms.
Any ideas are much appreciated.

Hello there

I have just been given a chair which is an egg chair but I am not sure whether it is genuine. It has no markings on the base at all but it is certainly an old example. The chair  rotates at the base but does not tilt. The good news is that the base mechanism is exactly as that in the photo above (the sequence where the outer covering has been removed to reveal the Made in Denmark and initials FH) and the feet and legs are identical. There is a single screw in the base column as above. The covering on the one I have is almost certainly man made/syntheic but I know the person I got it frm would have bought it in the 60's and probably early '60's. Given the photographic detail above, I am going to carefully remove the fabric on mine and look to see whether it is stamped as the example above. If it is genuine then I'll have it re-upholstered in a really good quality fabric.
Here's hoping!
Thanks for all the detail on the thread as it is really intersting

Hi There
I have just come across this thread while trying to find out some information from a egg chair i have inherited from my parents.
I remember it as a child from their first house, and then when they moved it was left in the loft, i have had in the corner of my living room for the past 10 years and often thought about getting a cover for it, or have it reupholstered.
Really though i would just like to find out if it was a original and from more or less what year.
From what i have read here it seams so, but the only thing that was bothering me was the fact it was covered in a faux leather.
Anyway here are some photos including one of my mum sitting in the chair in the 70's.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hello Rootsboy

The chair I have is in the same black vinyl/pvc covering; the edges of the chair show the same puckering on the seams too. Unofrtunately, there is no identifying sticker on the one I have.
t woiuld be interesting to know when the first commercial copies of the chair began to be made? It seems the proliferation of design classics over the last decade or more is coincident with the emergence of the Far East and in particular, China into the global economy. I am not sure how easy it would have been to get copies of furniture like this in the 1960's.
Will be removing the pvc on mine in the shortly; the cushion that came with mine has had it I'm afraid. It has come apart at one seam and the foam inside looks a little worse for wear.
I am not sure who to use for the re-upholstering here in the UK but I'll worry about that when the current fabric has been removed.
