Got this set of 4 chairs for 10 bucks each. Took me a while to realize that they were Japanese copies instead of Danish chairs despite the Skagerak plaque on one chair. I suppose someone at some point tried to obscure that these were Japanese made? I don't know. You can see in the first image that something has been sanded off and covered with sharpie. I assume its the japan stamp since its on all 4 chairs.
My question is are these newer chairs? Is my suspicion correct on this being a very sloppy attempt to pass these off as danish?

cord looks too vintage, to be new reproductions, no?
I know there was some interest in Japan for Danish, scandinavian design as it obviously shows resemblance to japanese craftmanship.
I think skagerak has nothing to do with this, these are nice danish influenced chairs, produced in japan, with skill.
somebody actually devalued the chairs (in my eyes) by putting a stupid plate on them and erasing the real valuable history of the chairs.
I blame the seller for this, who obviously doesn't know what he or she is doing.
The Danish cord I've seen...
The Danish cord I've seen that was broken like this was much darker in color, as in much older, I think. Maybe this chair has seen a lot of use or maybe the cord isn't as good as Danish cord. I dunno. Isn't the Japanese interest in Danish Modern fairly recent? Or were they making furniture in that style 30-40 years ago? I really don't know.
It may not be worth paying someone to redo the seats if you're going to sell them, but it's not that hard to do yourself if you're handy at all. See the giant, humongous thread on that subject in this forum.

On second thought...
...the broken cords may have more to do with the design of the chair. The weft cords at the front edge of the seat frame raise the warp cords up, which leaves them vulnerable to greater wear.
This is very different from the way Danish seats are constructed and woven.
