I recently came across these 4 Side Shell Style Chairs. The previous owner said they were Herman Miller/Eames; however, they do not have the normal Herman Miller Markings or any stickers. The only markings are the "...ss" or "ss..." shown in the photo. The previous owner believe this was an early iteration of the chairs before the Herman Miller markings became the norm. Is anyone familiar with this marking?
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh
Those are knockoffs. These chairs are among the most copied ever, even back when they were first introduced, because they are such a great design for institutions. So even when you find chairs that are genuinely old, there's a good chance that they're not Herman Miller.
All you have to do in this case is compare the photo to a photo of the real thing, which is easy enough to find online. The most obvious difference is that the legs aren't splayed out as much as on the real thing, but the top of the back is also a bit narrower.
