so the handle does not cover the lid? It is a nuisance to remove the lid and have to work the faucet in under the handle, and it is also a nuisance to have the steam leaking out around the edges of the lid so near to your hand.

Thank you both...
It maybe time to retire the Hobbs after 15 years. Both of these seem superior. But the Hobbs is like a family member. Not sure if I can do it. 🙂

It turns out Siemens has a new Porsche kettle...
Its kind of interesting to compare the evolution of the design.

Talk about a strange concept...
Check out this Cusinart retro kettle on an electric base!

this seems a simple solution...
a borrowing from Siemen's Porsche kettle. 🙂

I was aware
I was aware of the new Siemens kettle..but actually don't much care for it..
I always thought of the original as the classic, and the definitve, kettle design -
I guess when you think you've found the perfect design, it's difficult when they go mess with it ?!
Either I'm getting old.....
Or I don't want to buy a new kettle AND coffee maker ;o)
(the toaster is the runt of the bunch)

Robert, could you explain...
what you like less about the new one? It looks a little more like a cocktail shaker to me. Are you able to articulate any lines, forms, massing, surfacing, visual metaphor, or ergonomics that strike you wrong about the new one?

James, I like the Chef's Choice Deluxe you pictured...
except for one thing. It looks like it would be pretty easy to burn your knuckles if you lost your grip. Is it double layered and insulated, like the Siemens Porsche? If so, then knuckle burns would not be a risk. The old Hobbs, even when I goof, just hangs their well away from my knuckles.

Mine is a Cuisinart...
...version of this same sort of kettle which has the type of handle you hate (I hate it too) but it was on sale at Macys a couple years ago. I use it 4 or 5 times a day for green tea and have never been burned. The heating element is hidden inside so the kettle itself is not actually heated which is apparantly why they heat the water so quickly. In a practical demo I turned it on before I wrote this and it just clicked off.
Yes the kettle is quite hot so I don't believe it's double walled or insulated. The base is cool.

Siemens new designs
I hope these pics work!
I think the reason I prefer the 'old' design, is there is no messy negative space, and the products sit firmly on the surface. Their curves are in plan, not in profile as it were.
I guess they are following a trend in product design for more 'friendly' curves..maybe my taste is a little 'butch' ?

Robert...
Could you explain the phrase "messy negative space"? I'm a layman and so always learning the terms of art. Thanks in advance.
