I picked up four of these chairs for $10 a piece but I'm unsure of whether they're authentic. They're very heavy, and seem pretty old. I've never seen Cesca chairs that have upholstry only on the bottom, but perhaps at one point they were made that way? Or maybe the previous owner didn't want to pay for re-caning the seat? Unsure.
Thank you for your opinions!

likely
its very likely. the end stop on the arm rest looks correct as a cut bar and not capped, the articulation of the back rest also looks correct, the Cesca is a heavier chair than the cheaper copies. how the back rest is fitted is aslo an indication

I can't tell from the photo.
Is the cane on the back hand-laced? If so, it is likely that the seat frame would bear some evidence of the same even if it has been altered for upholstery.

I have
bought/sold/owned some real ones and all of them were stamped "made in Italy" on the chrome bar under the seat in the rear.

I believe...
Even certain "knock-offs" are marked made in Italy (but maybe not stamped in the chrome)? I guess perhaps it depends on your "real". I would think they should be labeled Stendig or Gavina (in addition to Italy), unless the label has been removed.
I had a couple that I don't think were stamped, but had Gavina stickers.

A nice chair in any event,
isn't it ? Comfortable ? A melding on nineteenth and twentieth-century design and craft -- sort of like FLLW's early work, in that sense ?
