I see no
reason why the mirrors have to come or go before the new doors. Nor do I think it's necessary to assume that replacing the doors will damage one of the mirrors. Glass isn't quite as fragile as we all think -- unless the door installers know something unique about this situation . . .
After the doors are replaced, it might be that the mirrors can be dressed to look just like another wall of glass doors. The beveled strips we all hate could be replaced by vertical members made to look like the door stiles, and matching framing could go around the perimeter.
Huh ? Huh ? Whaddya think ?
Oh spanky and SDR.
Those rooms are simply lovely. Suddenly I'm thinking of just replacing the mirrors with non-beveled. If It makes the space look a little too Boca Raton, I'll rip 'em out. Now I need to find a sofa. I love the idea of a cobalt blue textile Florence Knoll 2 or 3 seater. The 2 seater would work the best, especially if the piece were floated in the middle of the room. I also have an extra Barcelona chair (in storage). If I brought it into the room (with its twin), maybe that would help the coffee table...or? I could always sling the Platner chair and the Womb chair into the dining room. One of the best ideas came ( I believe??) from David, who suggested simplifying the fireplace wall with white paint,. I'll post snappies of the finished project. Many thanks to all of you. I am quite lucky to receive such stellar advice. I feel special.
Much love and hamhocks to all,
Aunt Mark
ps in case you're curious..the mirror bid is $2300.USD.(plus 6% state tax) That includes removing the old one's. I thought that it would be about half of that amount. Oh well.
pss the exterior of the building is about to go through a painting/waterproofing. The work crew will cover the exterior brown patio walls with an off white.
I'm curious as
to why these are referred to as beveled mirrors; the only bevels I see are to the cover strips of mirror at the center. The left edge has a metal trim strip, doesn't it ? Are there other bevels I'm not seeing ?
In any event, the prescription I offered above would allow the retention of the existing mirrors, with new minimal trim added to cover all edges.
Best wishes (I just typed 'bets swishes' -- but that can't be right) on this interesting project. You've provided what's been missing for quite a while, here: a subject on which to construct (accumulate) a long and lively thread ! Thank you thank you . . .
Love, Steve
Hi Mark, I thank you for...
Hi Mark, I thank you for your kind words. It seems that painting the fireplace and wall around it white will make the room feel more open, more spacious, and will allow your Nelson clock to pop as well. What color is your other barcelona chair? It may be interesting to have the cushions reupholstered in a color to match the space if they have already been reupholstered once. I am not thrilled with the current grayish color it seems to be. If they are original, maybe sell the barcelonas and use that money to buy another couple of spectacular pieces? Also, please replace the rugs!
There are actually two lovely Florence Knoll two-seaters on ebay currently. Both would need new upholstery, but that is to be expected. One has a walnut frame, while the other is in Miami and has the chrome frame. Knock the seller down on the price a bid and the Miami piece may be a perfect fit!

Hello David and Steve.
SDR, I wish that you lived closer. David, yes, both Knoll Barcelona chairs match...and the original suede cushions are more of a sand/tan color...they were in my fathers office, purchased in the early 1970's. They are in very good shape. The two matching ottomans are in a beat-up medium brown leather. They have no rips, etc..but they are very stained. Because the straps on both the chairs and the ottomans are the same brown, my plan was to recover the ottomans in the same sandy colored suede. But then I started liking the fact that they don't match...and I don't worry if someone spills a beverage on them. I bought them from the condo association when I lived in a Meis building in Chicago. They were in the lobby, and were very inexpensive. I actually purchased 4, and gave 2 away to a friend. Thank you both beyond belief...You are wonderful.
Gotta go.
Love, Aunt Mark
