Machined aluminum and glass, sexy.

However, my 2 year old MacBook is still working fine, I don't think it's enough to compel me to buy another.

lovely looking little machine...
lovely looking little machine, they just keep getting better but my old beast still edits audio, video and 3d models quite well, so not ready for that yet.
One thing I did like was the marketing language "the unibody is carved from a single piece of aluminium" Carved? Carved? I suppose 'pressed' or 'stamped' makes it sound cheap.
As a quick aside I did something a while ago that I'm really happy about, my computer was working super well, (its got excellent software on it...bit torrent er hmmmm...and it started making a sound that wasn't pleasing to the ear, turns out it was just dust in the fan.
Anyway I got the whole hard disk cloned using 'acronis universal restore' it cost $45.00 to get done and c drive is now sitting in a locked box, so if this mschine ever fails or I get a new one that I don't want to have to go through the complete pain of reinstalling EVERYTHING, I just physically put the new disc in, and boot up yay! Its like having a free computer considering how much you can pick up a cpu for now.
Sorry rambled a bit there, but it is a very handy thing to get done.

Heath, if you watch the video on the new macbook (as i just did and boy was i impressed), you'll see that the top is actually carves from a solid piece of aluminium by cnc machinery and then anodised, the video shows the production. they say the carved aluminium is being recycled. a great manufacturing process and a design manufactured closely to perfection with almost zero tolerance...

I want one.........
This is mega gorgeous, but my present Macbook is only 6 months old. I can't possibly justify passing it on to anyone and buying this for - well they normally last me for 2-3 years.
Drat, shiny white is so last year.
Jonathan Ive is my hero and I find it hard to believe that (given the success of the iPod) the whole world doesn't go Mac.

Nice but...
I'm about as computer ignorant as they come, but I prefer my Sony Vaio TZ series with dvd drive, ssd, AND it weighs less than 2.5 lbs. (Mac = 4.5 lbs.). Mac needs to come out with a light weight do-it-all book imho, although that sure is a beautiful machine. I am guessing the one-piece construction provides the machine with less parts to break, more durability?

Grrrrhhh! The story of my computer life
I just bought the existing MacBook 15 days ago.
Since 1984 I've had six Macs, a six pack of Macs if you will, and on all but one occasion a new design has become the standard within 3 months to 15 days of my purchase. Such is life!

Big Television Man,
Is there not some Mac scheme where if you buy a computer, and they bring out a new one within a certain number of days, you can return the one you bought and exchange for the new.
I may be talking rubbish here - I think I gleaned this information from one of those boards where posters include the specs of all their Mac products along with their board names and spend a lot of time worrying about Steve Job's weight loss.
Still it might be worth checking. Also, for next time. Mac Rumors website is pretty accurate in forcasting when new Macs and iPods are expected to be released
Good luck!

research is your friend
I've always been one to buy a new Mac a month or two before a new rev comes out. So this time I wised-up and checked macrumors.com and saw how close to end-of-life the Macbooks were. I was ready to buy a month ago, but I persevered.
I should have my new Macbook Pro by the end of the week. 🙂
I would have gone for the regular Macbook as stellar 3d performance isn't necessary for what I do, but I went pro for the firewire, which is necessary for what I do.

Seems crazy not to include Firewire on the new Macbook, particularly since iMovie is such an easy application to use. I've ended up having to edit all the family home movies since none of my kids have Firewire on their PCs.

Annette, I asked that very question before
making the purchase. What timeframe do I have to return and be credited against a new model and was told I'd get a hundred dollar credit against a new machine. But wait a second, maybe there is a 30 day return policy.

Big Television Man, don't feel bad if you can't exchange. The new Macbook's lack of Firewire seems to be bothering a lot of people - all those who still prefer to use a miniDV camcorder for starters. I think we are still waiting for the perfect lap top

mac vantage
my thoughts? i'm a fan.
apple has rarely disappointed me in both design and performance. [i do remember some headaches trying to upgrade my macplus os from 6 to 7, but that's been a while now!]
it can be argued that their stuff is pricey; but its resale value is also retained at a much greater level than its winbox counterparts.
i like the aesthetics of the cnc aluminum, but in the real bump-and-bruise world of portability, i'd probably rather have a robust polymer model that doesn't dent or scratch as easily.
carbon fiber, anyone? elastomer embellishments?
