hey guys (and Olive). My editor wants me to write a feature story about the way designers are using unconventional materials. (I tried telling her that the cardboard chair was designed by Gehry back in 1972). Anyway. Do any of you have any more contemporary examples?

Historical Perspective
Does it have to be contemporary designers or can it incorporate an historical perspective? If so, definitely talk about the Eames fiberglass and plywood chairs. Even the Aluminum groups sling seating prefigured the way task chairs use mesh seats to alleviate pressure points. Some contemporary folks would be Gehry, of course - both in building and furniture; also Shigeru Ban is using a kind of rampant woody shrub in Japan to make furniture out of. Artek also contracted Shigeru Ban to construct a pavillion for them out of recycled paper/plastic composite thats pretty interesting. Artek is using bamboo plywood too, as a replacement for traditional wood veneers. The big contract companies like Herman Miller and Knoll and Steelcase are using more and more aluminum in their pieces because it can be polished like chrome, but is recyclable (along with lots of other materials designed to be recyclable). And while you're talking about aluminum you could bring in Emeco - still making the faithful old Navy Chairs, along with a host of new designers - including Gehry and Fosters & Partners. Alu has been a component in chairs for years, but a wholly recyclable -but otherwise indestructable - chair is pretty neat.

Cork
Jasper Morrison has made cork stools(plus other assorted cork items) from Vitra & Moooi. There is a boom of cork stuff.

Sure
Doesn't come out until the end of April. I'll post it here if you all promise not to make fun of it. You lot can be mean buggers sometimes.
BTW, I wrote a wonderfully controversial piece for the Sydney Morning Herald last week but it's a bit long to paste here. Google my name: Stephen Lacey and the word: Ugliness and you will find it.
