Hi,

I've just purchased some ant chairs. They're pretty rough, but I planned to clean them up, sell some and keep some. However.. although the seats look authentic, the bases are all stamped 'Kingfisher Limited'.. After looking high and low online, and asking my wife, I'm wondering if the chairs are either Fritz Hansen bentwood seats with new bases by 'kingfisher ltd'.. or in fact repro ant chairs by 'kingfisher ltd'.

The bases are bent and look rubbish, the seats look good.. but that's where my knowledge runs out sadly.

Anyone heard of 'Kingfisher' ant chairs?

Thanks for any help with this.

Stew

Could be.
It's conceivable that they could have made those Ant chairs; bent wood and bent steel tubing was their specialty.

Thank you
I've since spoken to 2 ex-employees from Kingfisher who worked at the company until it shut in 1977. They called other ex-employees and were convinced that the company never made chairs. They concluded that, when the company was sold to ESA, their logo was stamped onto the chairs. All sounds a bit odd. Thanks for the comments.

just in case anyone was interested.
In case anyone was at all interested in this thread. I recieved this email from an ex-kingfisher employee.
"Remember our chat about Kingfisher chairs. Last night we had a Kingfisher old boys and girls reunion, and the talk about you, and the chairs came up. One of the people who worked in a different part of the factory to me, said he worked on the chairs, but we must be going back 60 years. I think the parts where purchased, and all the staff at our factory did, was assemble them."
Quite interesting. Many of you will sleep better for knowing this.

Interesting stuff
The chairs here do not appear to have any veneer.

Huh? The veneer is plainly visible in the lower left corner of the second photo.
