I am looking for a new wristwatch. My current watch, a TAG Heuer 2000 Classic looks to have bitten the dust (or at least the cost to repair exceeds its value).

So, I'm in the market.

I pretty much know what I want—
An automatic chronograph with a large black face (45mm+), with bold clean graphics (sans serif, arabic numbers), in a stainless steel case, of machined construction (machined preferable to cast). Black wristband (I can always replace a wristband). An exhibition back would be nice, but not a prerequisite.

Right now, my standard of comparison is the U-Boat Flightdeck. However, that is not an option. Not because of the obscene price (though that could do it), and not even because I have a problem with this Italian watch named after a Nazi submarine (though that bothers me, too). It is not an option because of a design flaw that, for me, makes it unwearable: The crown on the side is of exceptional size. Because of this, they moved it to the right side of the watch face (standard practice is to have it on the left). They did this purposely because the crown is so large, it would otherwise bang uncomfortably against the wrist/hand of the wearer. I am, alas, left handed, and hence, wear my watch on my *right hand*. That means that this unique design feature, turns into a flaw, and creates the precise problem on my right hand, that it was meant to solve when worn on the left hand. Hence, I'm am obviated both from justifying the $3000.00 price, and from rationalizing the wearing of a timepiece with such ill-thought branding.

But damn is that a beautiful watch, and you really need to see and hold one to appreciate it. It has the craftsmanship of a fine piece of machine tooled architectural hardware, and that finely engineered, utilitarian feel of a leatherman pocket tool.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Chronograph
Wow, I will not be paying $3800.00 for this Louis Vuitton. But I will look at it for free.

Glycine ETA 7751 automatic
A bit busy, maybe, but a very well organized display of information design. And at $1500.00, it's getting into a more reasonable price range (for a watch that could last a lifetime, or maintain its resale value).

like i said in another th...
like i said in another thread take a look at Porsche Design watchs they are too cool.....
I collect watches so know a few things about them.
I have owned a Rolex President for 30 years next week I gave $1700.00 U.S. dollars for it in 1977 ( a week before my first miserable wedding that only lasted 14 months ) I had it cleaned and a new face 5 years ago it still rund like a top and is it great shape I bought a Briteling Chronograph for 2800.00 gold and silver 10 years ago and it is still a sleek watch but lately I have been buying fun watchs but they have really jumped up in the price around 2000. for starters for these watches one is MOMO design I got at Nieman Marcus the other is a small Briteling and of course I ordered a Porsche design watch last week .
I keep telling my wife that I want the Franck Muller long island watch real bad.. I keep telling her Christmas's is coming !!! do you hear me???? she says I thought you were JEWISH lol..

any one for a Tourbillion
The Tourbillon is the most refined watchmaking complication as well as the most dazzling technique known in watchmaking. It is both folly and wisdom. Folly because the sheer technical nature requires exceptional dexterity, and wisdom because it averages out the irregularities of time.
The Tourbillon, a small cage containing the escapement and balance-wheel, offers all master watchmakers the possibility of making their biggest dream come true: to achieve perfection in a mechanism's running.
Indeed, a watch runs differently according to its position. the heart of the movement can beat at different speeds, which causes discrepancies in the time given.
The Tourbillon was therefore invented to average out errors of rate in the vertical positions, caused by the earth's gravitational pull on the watch's movement. This wonderful specialty was invented in 1801 and, since then, only a few dozen different Tourbillon models have been made.
Franck Muller has patented his own Tourbillon. He has become a master of this art, which has contributed to the development of many of his world premieres integrating the Tourbillon. The owner of a timepiece with a Franck Muller Tourbillon wears, on his wrist, a living example of the evolution of watchmaking history, to which Franck Muller, contemporary watchmaker, contributes day after day.
For this nice little watch a modest
$100,000 I will be glad to place the order for you .

Thanks
nike,
Panerai has some very nice watches, but not really what I'm looking for.
However, the IWC Pilots Watch is quite nice:
(at a mere US$10,150.00)

----------
LRF,
And the IWC's make the Porsche's seem downright economical, at a humble US$4000.00 for the Dashboard PTC Titanium Chronograph.

I had tried on a couple Porsche models last weekend, actually. They look beautiful, but candidly were not that confortable on my wrist (the store I went to was heavily pushing the models with the rubberized wrist band and did not have the one shown here).
Though I'm by no means yet committed, I'm leaning heavily towards the
FORTUS Pilot Pro Chrono 5972211
Here again:

Thanks for the input and until I make my purchase, I'm still very open to other recommendations.
cheers,
Chris

Bell & Ross
Have you looked at Bell & Ross?
http://www.bellross.com/
This is my new favourite, it is a definite love it / hate it watch,
They do more traditional styles also, the Vintage 120 looks like it might be suitable

thanks
pete,
I was shown the Bell & Ross line, though they did not have the 126, you just shared. Yes, it is nice (I'm not so crazy about the square once, and when the sales woman tried to steer me to them, my wife quickly shot that down.). Here is another nice, similar Bell & Ross:

I was also scoping this Graham on eBay:

But I'm still most partial to that Fortis up there, above.
