I'm in New York & I've got two secondhand Angelpoise 1227 desk lamps, with UK plugs & sockets.

Took one to my hardware shop for advice on rewiring, assuming I'd need new plugs & sockets. Hardware guy suggested that adding American UL plugs would be sufficient-- my hardware shop in fact sells the bulb required for the UK socket.

I switched both plugs. One lamp now works (voila!), one refuses to work-- am guessing it's the socket that's bad, have triple checked my new plug's connection.

My question: Does anyone know of a suitable cheaper alternative socket than that included in the Anglepoise "spare" kit (which would cost me about $75, just to obtain a friggin' socket)?

"Obedient"-- hah!

I bought a 60 watt bulb.
That too seems to work like a 60.
