I don't think there were any designers of note who designed for American of Martinsville (including George Nelson, who did not design for AoM).
That said, the earlier pre-1963 pieces are actually very well built and look great. Very unique designs!

Yes they tend to be very solid and heavy and the designs are awesome, some are even better than designer pieces from Brown Saltman, Lane, etc.

I think the common Nelson mis-attribution is mostly because of these-
