Just don't dress like an FBI agent and you'll probably be fine. I found a nice pair of chairs by knocking on some ones door and they were happy to part with them. In fact they were great folks and ended up doing a barter for them.

Most people just don't care
I knocked on a guys door and traded two Max Stackers for two painted Eames shells. He was happy to trade. And it's not the power of persuasion that I got those chairs...some people just don't care.
A lot of my friends laughed at me (and are still laughing) when I said I was about to get 120 rusted beat-up Bertoia side chairs last year. They're all part of the design world and do not care AT ALL about MCM furniture. All 120 are sold and I have a smile on my face.
