Stumbled upon this artists' gallery in La Clusaz, France, yesterday while skiing. Normally, I detest home decor stores in the mountains because they are all just too country-cutesy, cow-oriented, etc.

This guy's stuff, however, was really cool.

Mmmm not for me, can't imagine it retaining any interest in even a couple of years, about as affected as my christening plate, which I just found. I see where it all went wrong now.

Agreed - Shag has been doing this for years.
While I like Shag, the work was dated upon birth. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, as I occasionally fall victim to blatant retro throwback kitsch. I know better, though.

Similarly throw back in nature, I really like Eleanor Grosch's work.
I met her years ago at the Flatstock convention in Austin. I made a comment to her about a resemblance to Charley Harper, which she in turn lit up and let me know she had recently discovered him. This was before the whole Harper mania resurgence. Her work resembled Harper's back then, but not as much as I suspect much of what I saw was pre-influence.
Either way, I love that she unapologetically keeps moving this particular style forward to our young people today - many of whom have never heard of Harper.

Heath,
what is a christening plate used for? P.S. If your mom picked that out back in the day, shame on you for making fun of it!

No joke. It's killer compared to all the crap out there now. Just google image it and see!
A Christening plate is something they give you after you are spinkled in the church as a baby. Why you need a plate to commemorate your salvation I don't know. My church growing up didn't Christen, we Baptized. We just got dunked in a swimming pool and celebrated afterwards with fried chicken and a pool party.

OK, I'm obviously
going straight to hell because all 3 of my children were christened in the Catholic church, (my husband is Catholic), and I never bought them any plates! No one told me. I bought them cakes in the shape of a cross and the cutest little white dresses. But no plates. Jeez. I suck.

Its that strange little bo peep sort of 70's illustration, probably the next retro cool thing. This stuff is too highly stylized to be anything more than illustration really, but its ok, I do cherish the plate, its has an egg cup too and has 'made in Rhodesia' on the back so its a little bit of personal history, my Dad worked at the ceramics factory for a while.
That bear has post traumatic stress disorder.
