Yes, I just finished reading the original thread about alarm clocks. While much of the debate between the existence of time to US conversion to the metric system was fascinating, very few of the original links worked.

So - my little crapola CVS battery powered LED alarm clock has died after nobly serving for 9 years.

My requirements for a new one are:

Simplicity
Ease of use
Ability to see the display at night
Variable or non-offensive alarm sounds.

I'd like to stress the last one. Nothing is worse than waking up thinking you're in a fire drill or an air raid.

My cell phone currently provides all of those functions but I'm not so great about paying attention to battery life. And I often leave it in the livingroom.

The little Muji clock is at the top of my list, but I thought I'd throw it out to the crowd for any other suggestions before making a final decision.

Pick me up clock
Sleek, modern and couldn't be simpler. The name refers to the fact that the night light turns on when you pick it up. We have 4 of them scattered about the house. Very functional and minimal. they also seem quite sturdy, no problems at 4 years of age.

.
I remember going through this about the same time of the old thread.
I stopped by the MOMA store and needed to see my top picks in person.
None of them supply all of the key functions i need.
I have a vintage Braun graveyard. Such a shame that they are no longer.
The few new ones offered are not the same. Just visually similar. I think
made in China now, but not certain of that.
After a few mistakes i settled on the ugly seiko based on function and
Amazon reviews. Snooze, crescendo gentle alarm that builds to a scream.
Full on light when top is touched. Very faint green glow when alarm is set.
Faint orange when not...
After two years it has made up for uglies in performance.
I think it comes in white and may be a better choice.
i-phone is fine in a pinch or traveling but i prefer to turn off my phone at
night.
I really like Olives choice!

The gentle to scream alarm...
the pick me up does do that...but no 'snooze'. And the green glow function is there too.

I don't have a specific...
I don't have a specific suggestion Lucifer. The above are all very attractive. Perhaps there's something in the iPod/Nano/Zune market with a alarm/dock setup. Customize your alarm sound to virtually anything.
Another thing to consider, and I say this genuinely and from personal experience...*think* yourself awake. That is, prior to prepping for bed, observe current time and the time you want to wake up. Repeat again while doing pre-bed things (brushing teeth, applying facial cream etc). Then again just before turning out the lights. With some practice, you'll wake up pretty close to the desired time. It really does work. One can use this same process for naps.
Deep thoughts. How did humanity wake-up at specific times before the introduction of any type of alarm clock? Roosters don't count.

Your Muji and Olive's Pickmeup are attractive -- I like them both -- but they're both battery-powered, right?
Do they provide any low-battery warning?

Yes,
the time is off by a noticeable number of minutes, a symptom that appears quite quickly. Never had any trouble knowing when to change the batteries and always have a reliable alarm when the power goes out. Which, both back in MA and here in NM, seems to happen regularly!
The thinking yourself awake thing does kinda work. I rarely need an alarm, pretty much only when I need to get up at an unusual time.

Woof Woof
Funny you should say that, that's how I normally wake up. The only time for alarm (pun intended) is on special occasions - trips, appointments etc...
My cell phone has a gentle alarm on it, but I really don't like having my phone in the bedroom with me. Bedroom is for sleeping - not talking/texting/email.
I'm not so worried about battery life. Like Olive says - you know pretty quickly.
An option that I'm leaning toward are these LED wooden clocks. I like the simple cube shape, I like that the time goes away until you snap your fingers. But naturally I want the walnut version in the picture, when the actual clocks are only in white or wenge. And I'm just not sure about the alarm quality.
Although, maybe my unicorn alarm clock just doesn't exist exactly as I want it.
