As to raulduke's question, there is a lot of stuff that I personally find to be kitsch that many other people highly respect and value. I would rather not start delineating what I find kitschy and what not, because I don't want a flame war. 1950s Americana is always kitschy in my eyes.
And all the estate sales. It is pretty hard to think that the furniture of an entire generation that is extremely well made, and often using very fine materials would be completely overlooked. One can go on and on about what made it as appreciated as it is, or would have made it more appreciated, or less, but that sort of quantity of furniture does not magically disappear without a passing glance.
