Robert Sonomon
These are two of 15 lamps that i bought out of a closed down office furniture store that went out of business in 1982 that sold real hi end furniture and accessories to oil and gas companies doing well in the late 70s and early 80s me being one,
Those were the years when every one wanted killer offices and price was no object, just wanted the place to look knocked out,
a good friend took me by to look at the building for a potential warehouse for one of our businesses
When i went into the office furniture store it was not only a real mess but time warp closed for almost 25 years,
I went to the third floor and sitting in a room with no light was a Herman miller 670 lounge chair with 5 inchs of dust , the store carried miller in the 60s and on the 2nd floor was all the lamps of Robert Sonomon, verner panton made by Louis Paulsen Gio Ponti lamps a Italian company call Riggo hanging lamps ,more lamps and some wonderful things from a company called mutual sunshade,
I was so excited to see this stuff it was earey as this stuff had been sitting since the early 80's in the top part of this old warehouse, i asked the owner for what he wanted and at first he said he could not sell cause they were in there old partners estate and could not be divided till the building was sold
To make a long story short i went back every month for 8 months and finally i said this is so stupid.
I bought the guy 1000 dollars cash and he helped me carry every thing out.
I never put this in the best deals like the dumpster finds cause i did pay a grand but it truly was the best grand i ever spent, cause when i moved to my new home we used every thing that i bought especially the wonderful hanging lamps by sononmon, panton, and Jacobsen,

only at this fine office ...
only at this fine office furniture store that catered to the fancy offices, That is how I was able to get 6 of them, they also special ordered Louis Paulsen, and had several of those , that i was able to get,
The furniture was nothing great cause it was mostly office, and not knoll or HM just high dollar stuff like Pace collection for the office , most or the stuff was from the 70s that would not have meant much to us at the time, but it was really eeeri to go see it on the top floor 25 years after they closed the store in a deemly lite room , with all this stuff in original boxs not touched for almost 30 years dont you know there has to be so many stores like that with old stock that know body has touched for years, kinda TIME WARP!!!!

Yea it's nice
but one of my requirements is a table or floor lamp where the bulb is not part of the external design. If, for some reason, you can't get those silver globes, you'll be in trouble.
In a few years, standard incandescent are gonna be darn hard to find in the US.

Those bulbs are known, at least in the UK, as 'crown silver' - you can get them easily enough in bayonet or ES and 60w or 100w.

Chrome dome, I call them
Al lthose Philips lamps I have were actually designed for the bulb, which was invented by Philips in the 50s

Chrome dome source
Does anyone have a US source for the "chrome dome" bulbs? I have looked on and off for the last couple years and have not found any.

Crown silver is definitely...
Crown silver is definitely the right trade name - if you do a google search you'll see that this is how suppliers describe them. A chrome dome is the little cover you can put over screws heads on mirrors etc.

Incidentally be aware that the 100watt bulbs are bigger than the 60w ones - several of the Philips lamps were designed to take the larger size 100w crown silvers ....so that the silver part protrudes from the top of the shade.
I'm actually quite worried about the threat to ban incandescent bulbs (I think it's already happened in Australia) so I'm planning to stock up on these, the big spotlight types and the tubular colorenta bulbs which are used in a lot of 30s lamps.
