Have you seen this insanely cool 1938 prototype car called thje Phantom Corsair, renamed in the film as "The Flying Wombat". Selznick paid $12,000.00 each to have these cars built.
Great little film made during the time when Selznick was preparing 'Gone With The Wind".
It's a nifty film, starring
Janet Gaynor
Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
Paulette Goddard
Roland Young
Billie Burke
Minnie Dupree
Henry Stephenson
Richard Carlson
Some cast, huh?

I haven't seen this car in many years, and your interior photo is the first proof I've seen that the origins of this machine have to do with my childhood automotive holy grail, the 1936-37 Cord. (I saw my first one at the "Eight Automobiles" show at MoMA, in 1951. I was nine.) Note the steering-wheel hub and the unusual dashboard instruments, and compare them to the illustration below.
The story I'd read about the Phantom Corsair said that it was built from a Cord -- but no documentation was offered to back this up. Now, I am sure. Thanks !
The Cord was an advanced design for its day, with a unibody and front-wheel drive, concealed door hinges and no running boards. The saga of its short production life makes an interesting tale.
