Hello, I stumbled upon this topic as I was also looking to identify a sofa that is also a France & Daverkosen piece and supposed to be an Ole Wanscher design.
Yet through my thorough search on the net, I have found no such model made by Ole Wanscher, and strangely enough the design looks very similar to the armchair model "fd 172" by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard Nielsen which you have just identified.
Does anyone maybe have any information on this sofa and its relation to this armchair?
Many thanks in advanced.
I do not have any specific documentation for your sofa. However, F&D often had 2-seat and 3-seat versions of their chair designs, and even grouped them within the same model number, differentiated by a suffix. Based upon the supporting frame design, the vertical coils of the backrest support, and the spacing of the vertical coils, I am confident that your sofa is in the 172 family. It would be fd 172/3. There is a good likelihood that there is a two-seater (fd 172/2) somewhere out there as well. The finish does not look original however.
Ah thank you very much for the help. This is most likely the case, as they do seem to be quite identical.
The cushions definitely are a great plus! The seller says the original upholstery might even be underneath the current one.
But who knows...maybe this was inspiration for the design of their later sofa model "fd 417"
Word of warning: while it is great to have the original spring cushions, they can also be a little pricey for repair by your upholsterer during the reupholstering effort. Ask me how I know that 🙂
I would not be too concerned about original fabric upholstery for this piece, whether it is there or not. If you're planning on using it, you'll want to have new batting and upholstery and not worry about where that old stuff has been (insert Aunt Mark comment here). It's not like original leather on a Chieftain, where it can have a significant impact on both provenance and value.
