Yeah, the more I look into typical Kagan designs, the less this piece resembles the real thing.

I guess I just have a funky couch with worn out leather. 🙂

It doesn't look like it has a visible base at all--there must be something there but it's not meant to be seen. Kagan sofas have either tapered legs or those roundish wood plinths. The shape is similar to some Kagan sofas but different enough that I'd say you likely have a later "inspired by" design---maybe 15-20 years old? I know there were things like this made around that time because there was a store in Baltimore that carried a bunch of them, but more exaggerated than yours.

The upholstery material might be that processed leather stuff that is made by grinding up real leather scraps and reconstituting it in sheet form to be used like leather. They can emboss the surface to give it all kinds of textures. It tends to not wear well---gets roughy, flakey, peely.
