Hi

I have this vintage fiberglass chair that I picked up recently. It's very similar to an egg chair but a very unusual shape which I can't seem to find anywhere. The most similar one's I could find were done by Thor Larsen or Eero Aarnio, however, this is not the same shape. Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions on who made it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Sorry I can't help with the ID but it could inspired by Eero Aarnio's Ball chair and other vintage pod chairs but it is actually very interesting as a found object even without a designer pedigree. The distressing and especially the graffiti reminds me of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The room where the chair is photographed is quite interesting too.

Thanks for the reply minimoma. I forgot to come back on the forum and check to see if there were any responses on this chair I posted pictures of. I agree with you and I like the graffiti on it also. I am going to re-finish this chair but I think I'm going to leave the interior alone as I think it adds character. Even if it's not a well known designer I still really like the look of it!

Hi Tom,

I wouldn't do anything myself, to the shell. As it's not a pedigree chair (in my opinion)

I would leave the surfaces insides as well as outside completely as is.

What I would do is make a new cushion, possible from previously used leather

(an old chair or couch), with a pipeless one seam finish.

It's a nice conversation piece, with all the graffiti and it's strange pill-shaped design!

It looks as if this chair originally was set up in a public area. Maybe it was part of a playground? An underground station? A park?

I think the interior was most likely covered in fabric, and the fabric got trashed and finally stripped off, a result of hard use over many years by kids and maybe a few young adults who lacked a certain respect for their surroundings [cough]. The writing inside looks like it's in a limited number of colors and styles which makes me think it wasn't done by many different people.

I would not do anything to it other than maybe clean up the outside a bit if it's really disgusting. What is the upholstery material on the cushion? That foam shape is a bit tricky to reproduce if you're new to upholstering. I would give it a lot of thought before making any changes to that.

spanky: but why would the base be all that rusty then? And the exterior so extraordinarily shabby? If this is indoor furniture, it must have belonged to a punk rock commune with a long undiscovered water damage.

Used in a basement or garage? Stored in one or the other for years? Many people exile older furniture to basement rec rooms once new styles come along and basements are notorious for dampness and flooding.

reminds me of a barrel chair except with a fibreglass tank as starting point. Like a folk-art creation happy to show you its roots.

Thanks for all the comments about this chair. I just came across an old add on youtube for tic tac. My chair is in this add and people are calling it an egg chair. This is the 1st thing I could find on this chair but still haven't been able to find out who made it. Do you think mine is the same as in the commercial?
