Hey all. Picked up chairs today at a thrift shop. They're label Stendig on the bottom as well as "property of Benjamin Franklin Federal Savings & loan) However I'm a bit intrigued as I've never seen a Cesca char in this style of upholstery. Should I assume that these are indeed Breuer Cesca chairs imported by Stendig? Or another Stendig chair made in the Cesca style? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi. These chairs were made in the early 60's by GAVINA Italy. They pre-date the Knoll exclusive- while M Stendig held the rights to produce for export according to design specs. Gavina still produced for KNOLL-& then Knoll acquired Gavina
M Stendig was a keen & brilliant tastesetter/curator-responsible for identifying, consulting on design for US market, bringing Finnish & Bauhaus offerings to the US market in & throughout the mid century. Nice chairs! ook carefully around the wood underside, as it may have a date stamp. They loo early 60s Well done, You.
Here's another early 60s Gavina Breuer chair. Later reproductions lack the slight upward bow on the bottom of backrest frame. Also, earlier mid century Gavina under Stendig show slightly lower backrest height-with the bars closet to the top.
